Really raise the school taxes? Get your house in order first. If goes up I go out of this poorly run district.

This school tax increase should be on the BALLOT for citizens to approve or deny! My wife and I reside in the Coatesville School District in West Brandywine Township. We are AGAINST the 8.4% School Tax Increase for several reasons:
1. The district is closing 3 schools – this should help mitigate the funding shortfall with less property maintenance, teacher salaries, benefits, and etc. Perhaps the district can SELL these properties.
2. The Coatesville area already has one of the highest school taxes in the state. Increasing the school taxes discourages people from moving into the district
3. There is a pending law suit in Pennsylvania regarding equitable school funding in the State. Because it is a ‘poor’ district, is it receiving its fair share of state funding?
The district claims that too many kids are going to charter schools. If Coatesville area schools – rated as some of the poorest in the state - were better, perhaps more parents would choose to let their kids stay in district schools.
Increasing the school tax will not increase the desired investment and growth in Coatesville. It will cause investors and families to RUN to other school districts with lower taxes. The school system will continue to implode as fewer families and businesses and a lower tax base will provide even less funding. Property values, new residents, and investment THE TAX BASE will decline.
The Coatesville school district needs to cut expenses or find other ways to fund the system. Harrisburg needs to support poor school districts on an equal footing to rich school districts. Perhaps Coatesville should merge districts with a neighboring district in order to cope with the challenges going forward?
It is for these reasons that we are against the tax increase.
