Parks and Recreation Meeting Minutes - June 7, 2021

Parks & Rec Minutes
June 7, 2021 @ 7pm
 Zoom Meeting
  • Meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM.
  • Roll Call – JoEllen McBride, Josh Youg, Angela Cordisco, Chris Cordisco, Brett Klukan, and Abbey Swan
  • Approved  March 1, 2021 minutes
  • Old business
    • Clean Up Day – Very successful with at least 60 volunteers (which is more than usual). Midway Grill supplied lunch gift certificates to all attendees ($5) at a cost of $2.50 to the township. Greg confirmed that many have already been used. People seemed happy with this solution and might be something we should consider going forward. We started our native pollinator garden around the memorial at Municipal Park with help from clean up volunteers. Additional volunteers came to help on Memorial Day as well. Eventually we would like to get some educational signage to add to the garden. It should also make for easier maintenance once the plants have been established. Clean up day really needs to be scheduled in the end of March or beginning of April in the future because the weeds are already burying the trash. We’re doing it too late when we save it for the week of Earth Day. Volunteers are also interested in having more clean up days throughout the year. We’d like to do another large event in the fall.
    • Coloring Contest – The contest was very easy and we ended up with about 15 entries which were all super cute. We did a random selection for the winners who came to pick up their prize baskets. The groups would like to potentially do more schoolhouse coloring contests (summer?).
    • 2021 Events – With COVID occupancy limits no longer an issue, we can move forward with planning events. We’d prefer not to offer food, but can do movies/concerts going forward. Abbey will reach out to Chico’s Vibe for their availability. The group decided to start events again in July and plan three events (two movies plus one concert). If Chico’s Vibe is unavailable, we can audition other local groups. We will host another FB vote to decide the movies. Abbey will contact Rita’s to bring the ice cream truck. The group discussed creating an environmental video to play before the movie.
  • New Business
    • Park Improvements – We need to re-roof both pavilions and the bathroom in Municipal Park. Hopefully, we can use ARPA money to redo some of the inside bathroom improvements (hand dryers, ventilation, etc.). Abbey discussed the Lloyd Park erosion issues and plans to do a Riparian Buffer planting with the help of the Chester County Conservation District. Abbey will create signage for the Lloyd Park to let people know that we’re doing stream restoration (and that one section of the streambank will be closed to access). We applied to get 500 trees through the Keystone 10 million trees program.
    • We have budget money for playground equipment in Dawkins Park. The group greed to replace the existing monkey bars and teeter totter, which are both very old with updated versions.
    • Abbey discussed a possible new walking trail and meadow garden for the 15-acre township-owned property near Thornridge behind the township building. She is going to apply for a Giant grant to convert the space from mowed grass to pollinator meadow with a walking trail around it (similar to the meadow garden at Longwood). The project would save substantially on mowing costs and parking could be easily created near the gravel lot behind the police station. Josh recommended reaching out to the folks in Thornridge just to let them know about our plans.
