ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Caln Township Board of Commissioners recently voted to establish a new Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) for the Township. The unanimous vote took place at the May 8th, 2025 public meeting of the Board. The purpose of the new EAC is to “serve as an advisory body to the Board of Commissioners in order to gather information and provide recommendations regarding various environmental issues, including the use of open space, ways to promote conservation of natural resources and encouraging environmental programs, all within the territorial limits of the Township.” With this vote, Caln joins the 34 other Chester County municipalities that currently have active environmental advisory bodies.

Paul Mullin, President of Caln’s Board of Commissioners welcomed the creation of the EAC: “Caln Township’s Board of Commissioners recognizes the importance of preserving and enhancing the natural environment for current and future generations. The creation of the Environmental Advisory Council ensures that sustainability remains a central focus of our planning and policy decisions. This Council will play a vital role in helping Caln Township address environmental challenges and opportunities with input from the community. We look forward to its work and active involvement in shaping a more sustainable future for our Township.”

The new EAC grew out of the efforts of Caln’s Sustainability Task Force, a temporary group of residents, staff, and existing volunteers established by the Board of Commissioners in April of 2024 to research and author a Sustainable Community Report for the Township. Through monthly meetings, Q&A sessions with experts, and online collaboration, the Task Force compiled a report highlighting dozens of recommended Action Items in seven Topic Areas (Sustainability Program, Stormwater, Biodiversity, Waste, Land Use, Energy, and Transportation). The report also recognizes Caln’s many sustainability-related accomplishments to date. The interactive Sustainable Community Report was adopted by the Board of Commissioners at their April 24, 2025 meeting and is available to read online, or to download at https://www.calntownship.org/sustainability.html.
